A lot of the jobs we attend in Brighton & Hove usually start the same way.  somebody has taken down an old light fitting expecting it to be a quick swap and then been met with a ceiling full of wires that don’t match what the instructions say in the box.

Can I Replace a Light Fitting Myself?

Next thing you know the new fitting won’t turn on, the lights trip the circuit breaker when you switch it on or half of your lights are now not working. We usually then arrive to find all the connections taped up because the homeowner didn’t want to make things worse.

Replacing a light fitting can be easy and straightforward  in some homes, but there are also plenty of situations where a simple job quickly becomes more complicated once the old light comes off the ceiling.

Why lighting wiring can often be confusing

Can I Replace a Light Fitting Myself?

Modern lights usually come with fairly basic straightforward wiring instructions, The problem is that many older properties in Brighton & hove have been wired in completely different ways.

The most common example is looped-in wiring at the light which consists of permanent lives, switched lives, neutrals and earths which are usually “old colours” of red and black compared to Blue and brown that we use now .

If these are connected up incorrectly, you can end up with:

  • Lights permanently stuck on or not working
  • Switches not working properly
  • Circuits Tripping
  • Unsafe connections hidden inside the fitting
  • Metal Light Fittings Need Extra Attention

Another issue we regularly come across is when homeowners want to install a decorative metal fitting onto older lighting circuits that don’t have an earth present.

This is very  important because all metal fittings need an earth connection for safety.

We’ve attended countless jobs where a new chandelier has already been installed without checking that the circuit had an earth, leading to customers having to take down their new expensive chandelier.

Bathroom Lighting Is Different

Bathroom lighting is another area where DIY work can become risky quickly.

Bathrooms have specific electrical zones which determine what type of fitting can be installed and where. Certain fittings need a higher IP rating to protect against moisture and steam.

We often replace recessed spotlights in bathrooms around Brighton & Hove, correcting where older fittings aren’t suitable for the location or have been installed poorly.

Common DIY Problems We Get Called Out To Fix

Can I Replace a Light Fitting Myself?

Over the years, we have been called to all sorts of lighting faults after attempted DIY such as:

  • Loose connections
  • Incorrectly connected switched lives
  • Missing earth connections
  • Over filled connector blocks
  • Unsuitable fixings used to hold up heavy fittings
  • Circuits Tripping
  • Flickering lights

Sometimes the issue is simply that the homeowner didn’t expect the wiring to be more complicated than the instructions suggested.

When Replacing a Light Is Usually Straightforward

There are situations however where replacing a fitting can be relatively simple especially if:

Wiring is modern and has been maintained

The light fitting is like-for-like

The existing connections are already safe and clearly marked

Suitable bracing is already fitted above the ceiling for a secure fixing

But the difficulty level can change quickly once older wiring, multiple switches or non-standard connections are involved.

What We Normally Do During a Light Replacement

When we carry out lighting replacements, we don’t just connect the new fitting and leave.

We always:

  • inspect the existing wiring condition,
  • identify all conductors correctly,
  • check earthing arrangements,
  • test the circuit after installation,
  • make sure the new fitting is mounted and secured properly.

A standard light replacement usually only takes around an hour, but carrying out the job properly can avoid faults and safety issues later on.
