1) Full Rewires in Brighton

One of our more recent re-wires was a terraced house in Elm Grove that a customer had recently moved into. When we received the call from our customer they wanted us to come over and have a look at the condition of the wiring as they didn't feel it was very safe. When we got to the job we found the property was still using its original wiring (nearing 70 years old!), No partial fix was going to cut it. We sat down with the client, explained exactly what we'd found and why a full rewire was actually the only sensible option long term. Once we sent over the quote and got the job booked in we managed to get the whole property re-wired in 7 days making it as un disruptive as possible for our customer.

That job is a fairly typical example of how we carry out a re-wire across Brighton and Hove. I'm Harry, I run Oval Electrical, and I've been doing this for over ten years. If you have a feeling it may be time to re-wire your home and are looking for a local and reliable electrician, this page should give you a clear picture of what's involved, what it costs, and how we work.

2) What a full rewire actually involves

Re-wiring your home means completely replacing all of the fixed wiring in your property. This is all the wiring that is hidden in your walls and under the floorboards. It isnt a job that you should cut corners on as the whole point is making your home safe. For a typical three-bedroom house, we usually allow seven working days and we always plan the work carefully so that disruption is kept to a minimum.

Every Re-wire that we complete is carried out to the highest quality and is certified by us with an electrical certificate and also we will File a Building control notification through our competent person scheme NAPIT.

3) How we knew to re-wire that property in Elm Grove

The Elm Grove job is one that sticks with us. The client initially phoned us because they were a bit worried about the electrics and wanted us to come over and check it out.

Once we had a look around we walked through with the client and showed them what we had  found. Old Rubber cables, No earths on the lights, Old Ceramic fuses and a lack of sockets in the property. This was a good opportunity to answer any questions that they had and  once they were happy with the quote, we got them booked in. We worked around their schedule, and had the job done and signed off within the week. They were living in the property at the same time and, aside from us having to lift carpet and floorboards we always ensured to lay them down at the end of each day so day-to-day life carried on as normal.

4) Our process, from first call to final sign-off

We aim to keep the whole process simple:

Get in touch - call us or fill in the contact form on our website. We are local so always aim to pick up the phone or reply to any emails the same day.

Carry out survey and quote -  we will arrange a time to come out, have a proper look at the property, answer any questions you may have and give you a clear written quote. No charge for this and no obligation.

Book you in - if you are happy with the quote, we'll find a date that suits you. We won't book you into a slot and then move you around at the last minute.

Work starts - We will always treat your home with respect. We try to keep mess to a minimum, we will protect surfaces where we're working, and will always keep you informed on progress throughout. No disappearing for days on end.

Testing and certification -  all of our work is tested on completion. You'll receive your Electrical Installation Certificate and we'll handle the Part P building control notification.

Feedback - we ask every customer for honest feedback at the end of the job. Our 90+ five-star Google reviews show that we actually follow through on what we promise.

5) Why some rewires go wrong  and what to look out for

The most common issue we see is homeowners choosing the cheapest quote and ending up with a job that's messy, stressful, and in some cases genuinely unsafe. A rewire that's been done poorly isn't just an inconvenience, it can create electrical faults and, in the worst cases, structural damage from cables routed carelessly through joists or load-bearing walls.

We always recommend our customers to get multiple quotes but it is important you ask these questions. Will the work be certified?  Does the quote include everything such as materials, testing, and certification, or are those added on later? Are you registered with NAPIT or NICEIC?

6) What's included in our price

Our prices are always fully inclusive (unless stated otherwise) which means it includes materials, testing and certification. A basic re-wire can start from £4000+VAT. We will always send you a written quote before any work is carried out. We aim to always be transparent about pricing from the outset; there will never be any surprises on the final invoice.

7) FAQ’S

7.0.1) How long will a re-wire take?

For a basic spec 3-bedroom house we would allow 7 working days from start to finish, however this can vary depending on a few factors but we will always aim to give you a clear timeframe before starting any work

7.0.2) Do I have to move out while my home is being re-wired?

No- While many of our customers do decide to move out while their home is being re-wired it isn't crucial you do. We have re-wired multiple properties where someone is still living there and we always make the process as least disruptive as possible.

7.0.3) How much does a full rewire cost in Brighton and Hove?

For a very basic spec 3-bedroom house our pricing starts from around £4000+VAT

7.0.4) Do I need to notify building control if I'm re-wiring my home?

No- We will notify building control for you once work has been completed as we do this by our Part P scheme NAPIT. You will receive a certificate to keep for your records.

7.0.5) What are the signs that a property might need rewiring?

There are a few signs that your home may need re-wiring such as: Discoloured switches and sockets, Old looking fuseboards with re-wireable fuses, Flickering lights, Burning smell, Faults occurring, Green goo coming from switches and sockets

7.0.6) Are you NAPIT registered, and does that matter?

We are, and it matters for a couple of reasons. It means our work is assessed by an independent body and meets the current wiring regulations. It also means we can self-certify under Part P, so you're not left trying to arrange your own building control inspection. When you're getting quotes, it's worth checking this, not every electrician advertising a full rewire near you will be registered.

7.0.7) What guarantee do you offer?

We offer a 12-month workmanship warranty, so if you are unhappy with the quality of our work we will come back and rectify any problem.

If you think your home may need a re-wire, then get in touch with us at Oval Electrical and we can provide you with a free quote and give you an honest assessment of what needs to be done. We are your local electrician and will treat your home with respect and make the whole process stress free
