1) Kitchen Re-Wiring in Brighton
A new kitchen is one of the best investments you can make in your home, and the electrical side is usually the part that catches people out. We rewired a kitchen in Woodingdean recently for a homeowner who was having a new kitchen fitted but the layout was changing. That meant changing where sockets were, adding extra sockets , and wiring in a dedicated cooker circuit because the new oven they were fitting was larger than the old one. It all had to be done in stages and co-ordinated with the kitchen fitter.
I'm Harry from Oval Electrical and I have been the electrician that Brighton & Hove home owners call when they are getting a new kitchen
Back to top2) What a Kitchen Rewire Usually Involves
A kitchen rewire isn't just swapping a few sockets it can basically be starting from scratch below is just some of what is usually involved.
- Adding additional sockets
- Altering and upgrading the lighting
- Installing new circuits for appliances such as induction hobs and cookers
- Under cupboard lighting
For the Woodingdean project, we installed a dedicated circuit for the new, large double-stacked oven, as the previous gas model only required a standard socket. To ensure safe operation, we installed a new 10mm supply cable running directly from the fusebox unit to the oven's new position.
Back to top3) Why Timing Matters
Getting a new kitchen usually means juggling multiple trades to come in at the right stage to not cause any delays. We regularly work with kitchen fitters so have experience of when is the right time for us to come in. This is usually straight after the old kitchen has been ripped out and then comes back again to do the final connections once all the kitchen units are back in place.

5) What Others Get Wrong
The most common problem I come across is kitchen fitters who offer to do the electrical side of the work as part of their package. Unless that person is a qualified and registered electrician, they shouldn't be doing it. The Electrical work required in a kitchen is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means it has to be carried out by a competent person and certified. This can lead to unsafe wiring and cause avoidable issues later down the line.
If you've had a kitchen fitted and you're not sure whether the electrical work was done correctly, I'm happy to take a look.
Back to top6) What's Included
Every kitchen rewire we carry out includes all materials and a full Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion. Our work is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and all parts carry the relevant manufacturers' warranty.
Back to top7) Pricing
Costs vary depending on the size of the kitchen, the number of circuits involved, and what the existing installation looks like. I'll always visit the site before quoting, there's no way to give an accurate price without seeing it. The site visit is free, and the quote comes with no obligation to proceed.

Back to top9) FAQ SECTION
9.0.1) Do I need a rewire before a new kitchen is fitted, or can the existing wiring stay?
It depends on the condition of the existing wiring and how much the layout is going to change. In some cases we can just extend the existing wiring but in other cases if the load is going to drastically increase we will need to run in extra cables.
9.0.2) Do I need a separate circuit for my new oven?
Potentially, Most new electric ovens especially larger ones with either a double oven or microwave oven built into it will draw much more power so will need a dedicated circuit put in. The same applies to Induction Hobs, they draw much more power than a standard electric hob so will need a dedicated circuit.
9.0.3) Can you coordinate with my kitchen fitter?
Yes and I actively encourage it! We often liaise with kitchen fitters and other trades to make the whole process as streamlined as possible
9.0.4) How long does a kitchen rewire take?
That depends on the scope of the work. A straightforward job which includes repositioning sockets and adding a cooker circuit can typically be done in a day. However, larger or more complex kitchens may take longer. I'll give you a clear indication of timescale when I've seen the job.
9.0.5) What if I find out the electrical work was done incorrectly by the kitchen fitter?
This is more common than people realise. If you have concerns about work that's already been done, I can carry out an inspection and let you know what, if anything, needs to be changed. I can also certify remedial work once it meets the required standard.
9.0.6) What guarantee do you offer?
All our work is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Parts and materials also carry the relevant manufacturers' warranty. If anything isn't right within that period, I'll come back and sort it — no arguments.
If you are planning on getting a new kitchen then make sure your electrics are in a good condition beforehand! We can offer any advice and give you a free no obligation quote.
