3) A recent fault we fixed in Brighton & Hove

Earlier this year we were called to a property in hangleton where the RCD was intermittently tripping. The customer had tried to reset it multiple times, but the fault kept coming back without any obvious pattern.

After receiving the call we popped over and started testing each individual circuit, we eventually traced the problem to a hidden junction box out in the garden that had filled with water and bugs. Because the fault only occurred when the garden lights were triggered by a sensor and when the moisture levels were high enough the fault wasn't immediately obvious. Once we located the damaged junction box we repaired it properly then the issue was resolved.

This is why proper electrical fault finding matters. This particular fault only occurred in a specific scenario and without a thorough investigation it would have cost the client in unnecessary repairs and still not fix it!

4) What’s Involved during Electrical fault Finding?

When you contact us, we will try to gather as much information as possible off of you before attending. Small details can often help us narrow faults down quicker.

4.0.1) Step 1 — Get In Touch

You can call us or use the contact form. We’ll ask a few questions about the fault like what’s happening and how long has it been going on for.

4.0.2) Step 2 — Explain The Issue

Any information you have can really help narrow down what could be causing the issue. The type of things we need to know are:

  • Does the fault only happen at certain times?
  • Is it just one circuit affected or the whole property?
  • Has any recent DIY work been carried out e.g changing a socket or hanging a picture?
  • Did the issue start after rain or bad weather?

These details genuinely help speed up diagnosis.

4.0.3) Step 3 — Booking You In

We will aim to be in touch within the same day and arrange a site visit within the week. In some emergency circumstances we will try get out to site on the same day

4.0.4) Step 4 — we carry out the investigation and fault finding

Once on site, we will carry out fault finding and testing to identify the source of the issue. Depending on the fault, this may involve:

  • Testing all circuits at the fusebox
  • Opening up sockets or switches
  • Removing appliances from the circuit
  • Lifting up floorboards

4.0.5) Step 5 — Repairing The Fault

Once we identify the issue we can normally fix the issue while already being on site, however in some cases the work required may be more complex and require us to send you an estimate for the work. However we will always ensure to leave your property in a safe condition before we leave

5) Common Electrical Faults We See

Over the years we’ve seen a lot of faults caused by poor workmanship or environmental damage rather than failed equipment itself.

Some of the most common problems we come across include:

5.0.1) Outside lights filling with water

Outdoor fittings are one of the biggest causes of nuisance tripping, especially cheaper fittings or badly sealed connections. Water ingress can cause intermittent faults that only appear during wet weather.

5.0.2) DIY electrical work gone wrong

We regularly attend jobs where wiring has been altered incorrectly, connections haven’t been tested properly or cables have been overloaded. Sometimes the fault isn’t immediately dangerous but causes ongoing reliability issues.

5.0.3) Damaged cables

Whether an animal has chewed through the cables or you have hung up a new picture and gone through the cable we often see the cause of the problem being a cable has been damaged

5.0.4) Faulty Appliances & Equipment

Sometimes the issue isn’t fixed wiring at all. Appliances can cause earth leakage faults that repeatedly trip RCDs or are poor quality items and are overheating causing short circuits

5.0.5) Poor Workmanship

Loose connections, overloaded junction boxes and badly terminated cables are still surprisingly common, especially in older properties or rushed installations.
