I work regularly across Shoreham covering properties from the Southwick border right through to the outskirts near lancing. You get all sorts of properties from post-war semis and bungalows to some new builds, and each brings its own challenges when it comes to electrics.

Last year I installed an EV charger for a homeowner who was just off Upper Shoreham road. When I came out to do a survey of the job I had a look at the fuseboard and it was completely full with no spare ways to add a new circuit. There were no issues with the existing fuseboard; it was purely just full up. So rather than replacing a perfectly good fuseboard we opted to fit a small dedicated EV charger board. We supplied and fitted a BG Sync EV charger and had the whole thing commissioned within the day.

I'm Harry McLoughlin and I run Oval Electrical. I have been an electrician for nearly 10 years now working in and around Brighton & Hove covering all aspects of electrical work. The majority of my work is now in the domestic side but I have plenty of prior experience working in more commercial environments.

1) Services I provide in Shoreham

EV Chargers Electric Vehicle (EV) Chargers - are probably the most requested job that we get in Shoreham. More and more people are starting to make the switch to electric vehicles and the convenience of charging up at home can't be beat.
Prices for installing an EV charger start at around £1,100+VAT. Although this can vary depending on if any other upgrades are needed or what charger you want installed. For example like the Job on Upper Shoreham road sometimes we need to make some alterations to the existing installation to install the EV charger.
We install a wide range of EV charger brands so we can give you a few different options and explain the benefits of each charger!

Fuseboard Upgrades - You would be surprised at how many homes in Shoreham have an old outdated fuseboard. The main issue we come across is a lack of RCD protection. This is what will save your life in the event of a fault and will trip before you have a chance to get an electric shock.

EICRs (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) - An EICR is an inspection of your Electrical installation, Similar to an MOT which you would have done on your car. There is no legal requirement for a private home owner to have one but if there was ever an issue in your home then your home insurance provider may not pay out. (Landlords DO require one by law before renting their property out!)

2) Common problems I find in Shoreham

Working in this area over the years, a few issues tend to crop up more than others:

Old fuseboards We still come across fuseboards with no RCD protection, Old re-wireable fuses or plastic boards.

No earth on lighting circuits. This is common to find in this area, as some of the houses when they were originally built and wired they didn't put an Earth on the lighting circuit to save on Copper. This can be fine if you only have plastic fittings, but more and more people are wanting metal decorative lights and switches. If there is no Earth on that circuit then that metal light fitting could become live! So if we come across this your only two options are replace all the switches and Lights for Plastic fittings, Or re-wire the lighting circuit.

Poor workmanship and DIY work. We are called in regularly to rectify work that's either been poorly done by a previous contractor or by a homeowner who has tried some DIY. There's no judgment here, we can come to assess the issue and make it right and safe.

5) FAQ

How much does an EV charger cost in Shoreham?

EV charger installation typically starts from around £1,100+VAT, depending on the charger unit and your existing electrical installation. If your electrical installation isn't up to scratch we may need to do some upgrades which can add to the cost. I'll always assess this and give you a full breakdown before starting work.

Are you NAPIT registered?

Yes, we're NAPIT registered, which means we can self-certify our work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Any notifiable work, such as a fuseboard upgrade or new circuit, will come with the correct certification, which you'll need if you sell or remortgage your home.

Do you cover the whole Shoreham area?

Yes we work across Shoreham as well as areas including Brighton, Hove, Westdene, Patcham, Hangleton, and Portslade. If you're not sure whether we cover your postcode, just give me a call and I can confirm.

My fuseboard is old, is that a problem?

It depends on the type and condition. Older boards without RCD protection don't meet current standards. We can carry out an inspection and let you know where you stand, there's no obligation to proceed with any work based on that assessment.

What is an EICR and do I need one?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a formal inspection of your property's wiring and electrics. It's a legal requirement for landlords and is increasingly requested by insurers and mortgage providers for older properties. We carry these out across Shoreham and will clearly explain any findings.

How quickly can you book me in?

This can vary depending on how busy we are but we aim to try and keep lead times to around Two weeks. For smaller jobs we may be able to fit it in sooner but I will always let you know our earliest appointments.
